Q - Can I use Titanium bolts on the Thomson stem?

A - We cannot recommend any bolts that we have not tested.

There are several grades of titanium, and most of the grades are not as strong as the steel that we use in our bolts.

The bolts on the Thomson stem are made from a high strength steel alloy, and we add an extra manufacturing process to increase the fatigue life of the bolts.

Q - Will spacers work with the Thomson stem?

The steerer tube must be inserted at least 1.38 inches (35 mm) into the Thomson stem after the spacers are in place below the stem.

A - Only use the shim supplied by Thomson.

Most shims are too short, which will not allow the stem to clamp properly.

Q - What is the difference between a Road Stem and a Mountain Stem?
로드용 스템(싸이클)과 산악용 스템(MTB)의 차이는 무엇인가?
A - The main difference between a road or mountain stem is the difference in handlebar clamp diameter.
가장 큰 차이점은 핸들바 클램프 지름이다.
The handlebar clamp area on a road bar is 26.0mm,
on a mountain bar the diameter is 25.4mm.
로드용 핸들바 지름은 26.0mm, 산악용 핸들바는 25.4mm이다.
There are now also clamp diameters of 31.8mm, also known as oversized.
'오버사이즈드'라고 31.8mm 클램프도 있다. (로드 & 산악 공히)
We do not recommend that you mix bars and stems of different types.
용도가 다른 핸들바와 스템을 사용하지 말 것을 권장한다.
We insist that you not use a Carbon Fiber road handlebar in a mountain stem or a Carbon Fiber mountain bar in a road stem as the potential for bar breakage
would be very high.

Q - The bolts in the steerer clamp of my stem are stuck, what do I do?
스티어러 클램프 볼트가 꽉 끼어 버렸다. 어떻게 해야 하는가?
A - The two most common reason bolts become stuck in our stem is severe over tightening of both bolts, and then loosening or removing one bolt all the way before loosening the other bolt.
끼는 이유가 두가지 있는데 볼트를 너무 강하게 조인 경우와,
다른쪽 볼트를 풀지 않은 채(꽉 조여진 채)로 한쪽 볼트만 풀거나 분리한 경우이다.
This happens because the remaining bolt is now bearing the load of both bolts.
양 볼트가 지탱할 하중을 남은 볼트 하나가 버티고 있기 때문에 이런 일이 생긴다.
Try tightening the first bolt back down to relieve the load on the stuck bolt and then loosen each bolt a little at the time alternating between bolts until they are both loose.
풀른 볼트를 다시 조여 끼어버린 볼트의 하중을 줄여준다. 그리고 느슨해질 때까지 양쪽 볼트를 번갈아 조금씩 풀러준다.
If that does not work, or if you have stripped the bolt heads you will need to drill out the bolt.
그래도 안 되거나 볼트 헤드가 망가진 경우는 드릴을 사용해서 빼야 한다.
DO NOT USE AN EXTRACTOR TO REMOVE A FROZEN THOMSON BOLT.
절대로 추출기(주: 잡아서 뽑는 기구로 정학한 명칭 미상)를 사용해서 볼트를 분리하지 마라.
Thomson bolts are special high strength alloy and are stronger than extractors.
톰슨 볼트는 고강도 스틸 합금으로 추출기보다 강해서
The extractor WILL break and that will make drilling out the bolt almost impossible.
추출기가 부러지고 볼트를 뺄 수 없게 될 수도 있다.
Using a 7/32nds or 5mm drill bit, place the drill in the hole where the Allen wrench used to fit.
7/32" 또는 5mm 드릴날을 사용해서 육각렌치에 맞는 구멍을 뚫어라.
Apply even pressure and oil while drilling out the bolt.
볼트에 구멍을 내는 동안 압력과 오일을 추가하라.
You are done when you feel and hear a pop, the bolt head should be on the drill bit.
다 되고 나면 드릴날에 볼트 헤드가 달려 나온다.
You are not trying to drill out the entire bolt out of the stem.
볼트 전체를 드릴로 뽑아내려고 하지 마라.
Once the head is off of one bolt remove the other bolt or drill it out if it is stripped as well.
한쪽 볼트 헤드가 떨어져 나가면 남은 볼트를 분리하라. 다른 볼트도 헤드가 망가졌다면 같은 방법으로 드릴을 사용해서 빼라.
You may need to tap the clamp to get it out, and then you will be able to remove your stem.
클램프를 쳐서 떼어내면 스템을 분리할 수 있을 것이다.
The shank of the bolt or bolts will be left in the clamp; use pliers or your fingers to remove them.
볼트의 몸통은 클램프 안에 그대로 있으면 집게나 손가락으로 제거하라.
Never resort to cutting any part of the stem off of the steerer tube.
스티어러 튜브에서 스템의 어느 부분도 잘라내서는 안 된다.
Using new stem bolts follow all instructions for reinstalling the stem.
