New for 2008 is the introduction of 29” wheels into the Marin Bikes lineup. 29er’s have different riding characteristics from their 26” wheeled counterparts.
The larger diameter decreases the wheels “angle of attack.” This means that the wheels roll over obstacles in the trail with greater ease, and when combined with the larger wheels’ impact on gyroscopic forces translates into a wheel that has significantly more momentum. This can allow a rider to cross rough terrain quickly.
In relation to the centerline of the wheels, a 29” rider has a lower center of gravity, giving the 29er rider an increased sense of stability. Additionally the 29” wheel rearranges the contact patch of the tire making it longer. This can help increase traction on loose or rough surfaces. As the tire sinks into a soft surface the 29” wheel contact patch becomes larger than an equivalent width 26” wheel improving the tires ability to find traction so the rider can keep moving forward.
The Marin Product Development team has designed two Mountain and two Urban models that are unique in their styling while excelling in the 29er realm. Whether they are single speeds or greared models, each bike has the look and ride characteristics that are clearly Marin.
