MTB에 드롭바 달기 요령
I've seen a lot of questions lately on the subject of drop bars for mountain bikes. I think that there are a lot of misconceptions out there on just what to do and how to do it, so here's a few tips. These concepts were gathered through reading material on the subject by Charlie Cunningham, an early adopter of drops for off roading, and from an excellent piece done on the subject by Don Person, better known as "Shiggy" on mtbr.com's forums.

최근 MTB에 드롭바를 달 경우 요령에 대해 많은 질문을 접해왔다. 내 생각에는 어떻게, 무엇을 해야 하나 많은 오해가 있는 것 같다. 그래서 몇 가지 요령을 공유하기로 한다. 지금 나누고자 하는 내용은 오프로드에서 드롭바 사용을 처음 시작했던 찰리 커닝햄의 정보와 MTBR.com 포럼에서 Shiggy라는 ID로 활동하는 돈 퍼슨의 잘 정리된 내용을 기초로 한 것이다.

1. Probably the biggest misconception out there has to do with the height and reach of drop bar set up. Here is something that will help clear it up for you. Always, always, always ride off road in the drops. Off road drop bars were not meant to be ridden "on the hoods" as so many roadies are doing. The reason for this is control. Off road the bumps and jarring will make riding on the hoods a dangerous proposition. Riding in the drops actually lets you relax your grip, since the bumps force the handle bar into your hands. Plus, the round cross section of the bar is far easier to hang on to than the hoods.
1. 아마 가장 큰 오해는 드롭바 세팅 높이와 리치(Reach)에 관한 것이다. 분명히 하고 싶은 것은 오프로드에서는 언제나, 항상 드롭을 잡고 달려야 한다는 것이다. 오프로드에 드롭바를 사용할 때는 로드바이크와는 달리 후드를 잡고 달리기 위한 것이 아니다. 이유는 바이크 제어능력을 확보하기 위한 것이다. 오프로드 노면은 항상 울퉁불퉁하기 때문에 후드를 잡고 달리는 것은 위험한 발상이다. 드롭을 잡고 달려야 실제로 그립을 항상 꽉 잡지 않아도 무방하다..왜냐 하면 노면이 울퉁불퉁하면 드롭을 잡고 있을 경우 자연히 핸들바가 손안에서 벗어나지 않기 때문이다. 그리고 드롭 부분은 둥근 형상이라 후드보다 잡기가 훨씬 더 수월하다.


2. Taking #1 into consideration, it becomes clear that your off road drop bars are to be at a height where the drop section would be level with the height where your grips would be on a flat bar set up. This generally requires a high rise stem for your drop bar.
2. 1번 사항을 고려해보면 드롭바 높이는 드롭 부분이 일자바를 잡는 높이와 같아야 한다는 것을 자연스럽게 알 수 있다. 따라서 드롭바를 MTB에 달 경우 각도가 높은 스템이 필요하다.


3. Also taking #1 into consideration for reach, you may run into trouble if you are already running a very short stem, say less than a 90mm reach. Your stem choices will be limited and your reach may be compromised. It might be better to use a slightly shorter top tube on a different frame for a drop bar set up. (Or go custom)
그리고 1번 사항을 리치(Reach)와 관련해 생각해보면 이미 MTB에 일자바와 짧은 스템, 예를 들어 90mm스템을 사용하고 있다면 문제일 수 있다. 이 경우 스템 선택범위가 제한될 수 있고 리치도 최적보다는 더 길게 세팅될 수 밖에 없다. 드롭바를 달고 싶으면 탑튜브가 약간 짧은 프레임 (한 단계 작은 프레임)이거나 커스텀 프레임을 사용하는게 더 좋을 수도 있다.


4. Drop bars good for off road include the On One Midge bar, the Origin 8 Gary bar, and the Salsa Bell Lap.
4. 오프로드 사용에 적합한 드롭바는 On One Midge바, Origin 8 Gary 바, 아니만 살사 벨 랩 드롭바 등이 있다.


5. Stems that have high rise that work with threadless steer tubes are available from Salsa, Dimension, and a host of custom builders.
5. 쓰레드리스 스티어 튜브에 맞는 고각도 스템은 살사, 디멘전이나 그밖의 다른 커스텀 메이커에서 많이 구할 수 있다.


6. Drop bars can be used with single speed drivetrains or multi geared. STI shifters work great off road even with flared bars like the Midge and Gary bar. Bar end shifters can also be used, but because of the flared drop ends, they can sometimes be damaged in crashes.
드롭바는 싱글스피드 또는 다단기어용으로 사용할 수 있다. STI쉬프터 레버는 미지나 개리바와 같이 플레어드 바의 경우에도 문제없이 사용할 수 있다. 바엔드 쉬프터도 사용가능하나 미지나 개리바의 경우 드롭 부분이 밖으로 벌어져있어 충돌시 바엔드 쉬프터는 손상될 수 있다.


7. Brake lever tips should be easily reached from the drops. This means you will run the levers lower down on the bars than a road set up. Much lower! Mechanical disc brakes can be set up for use with drop bars if you use Avids excellent BB-7 for road levers, and there is a cheaper Tektro road disc brake as well. Currently no hydraulic disc brake set ups are available for off road drop bars.
브레이크 레버는 드롭에서 쉽게 잡을 수 있도록 세팅해야 한다. 즉 로드 바이크보다는 훨씬 더 낮게! 레버를 세팅해야 한다. 아비드 BB-7 로드용 디스크 브레이크의 경우 드롭바용으로 사용할 수 있다. 아니면 훨씬 더 저렴한 텍트로 로드용 디스크 브레이크도 있다. 지금은 오프로드 드롭바에 사용가능한 유압식 디스크 브레이크는 나와있지 않다.
